Fve guys, maybe three shirts between them, take to the stage. Theres a banjo, a fiddle, a drum set littered with gas cans, chains, and broken cymbals. Then they all start howling, stomping; its an anachronistic jug band party in a junkyard with sing-along hooks and weathered vocals from another time.

Their fans, an ever-expanding congregation, sing along and follow the band with an almost religious fervor, and as vocalist Greg Jamies eyes roll back into his head theres a sense that something almost sinisterly spiritual has overtaken everyone in the room. This is the world of O\'Death.

Originally formed in 2003 while the members attended SUNY Purchase, the band with Jamie on guitar and vocals, Gabe Darling on banjo, David Rogers-Berry on drums, Jesse Newman on bass, and Bob Pycior on fiddle self-released their first album in 2004. They quickly took to the task of stirring up a wholly original scene of NY musicians with their reverently twisted take on Americana filtered through a wealth of musical influences as divergent as Bill Monroe, Prince, Dock Boggs, Neil Young, The Microphones, and The Misfits via a series of shows at the now defunct Apocalypse Lounge.

As they gathered the songs for their second LP, \'Head Home\', the band perfected their mesmerizing and riotous stage presence and took to turning their share of heads across the country, playing over 100 shows in 2006, and gracing the stage alongside acts including Battles, Dr. Dog, Art Brut, Langhorne Slim, The Big Sleep, and Old Time Relijun.

With the re-release of \'Head Home\', the critically acclaimed NY act has created a perfect companion to their spellbinding live show. An accomplished and varied crew of top DJ talent will make sure the party\'s always on. Expect the likes of (in no particular order) Paul \'Phones\' Epworth, Ashley Beedle, Cagedbaby, Nathan Detroit, Barry Ashworth, Richard Norris, Justin Robertson, Dan Lywood, Jon Abblett and many more.

As one half of FC/Kahuna, Jon is one of the true pioneers of electronic dance music and has an impressive body of work behind him. The critically acclaimed FC/Kahuna album, \'Machine Says Yes\', went on to sell over 50,000 copies and includes such landmark tracks as \'Glitterball\', \'Hayling\' and the title track itself.

As a DJ Jon has helped to create three of the most memorable London clubs of the last 10 years. The legendary Big Kahuna Burger from 1995 featured many of today\'s biggest names in music including The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and Death In Vegas.

Headstart at Turnmills followed in 1999, a truly groundbreaking club experience that championed forward thinking electronic music. Dave Clarke, Andrew Weatherall, Josh Wink and Justin Robertson each joined Jon as monthly residents and Headstart provided the blueprint for many of the tech-edged nights out there.

Up next was 21st Century Bodyrockers in collaboration with Damian Lazarus and the City Rockers label, and once again Jon was at the forefront of pushing new music; Soulwax, Tiga and James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem all appeared here long before becoming the massive acts they are today.

Jon is currently in the studio working on his \'This Time Of Night\' project and has recently completed remixes for Mika, Ali Love, The Rumble Strips and Armand Van Helden.

As a founder member of Faust, Jean-Hervé Peron was instrumental in doing nothing less than changing the face of rock music.

As sunseastar, members of RBE and Bourbonese Qualk, Simon Crab and Andy Wilson have been making electronic music for over 25 years. In their incarnation as sunseastar they create music from computer processed location recordings.

sunseastar will release their first album, \'Fjaerland\', later this year, based on recordings made in Norway and the UK.

DJing is DJ Tango-Mango of The Komische Club and Drones Club.

For the last 11 years, the Kosmische Club has established itself as a place to hear some of the most forward-thinking, truly independent and downright amazing music ever made. Cherished by the open-minded, loved by the chronically energetic, and only occasionally visited by old men with beards, the Kosmische club\'s remit slowly began to include the best danceable, experimental music, non-chin-strokey electronica, and classic underground tracks.

Basquiat Strings were the outsider nomination for this year\'s Nationwide Mercury Prize 2007 with their debut album \'Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford\'. Led by the virtuoso Ben Davis on cello they finds inspiration from the raucous, driving Hungarian string groups of Transylvania, the luxuriously rich Brahms sextets and the unruly compositions and workshop arrangements of Charles Mingus.

They are joined this evening by astounding New Yorkian drummer Chris Vatalaro.

The JD Set is a series of nationwide live music events featuring cutting-edge talent thats storming the underground. Jack Daniels will be bringing together this staggering line up of artists by way of celebrating their well-respected musical heritage that spans over a century.

Peter Hook, legendary low-slung bass player with seminal bands New Order and Joy Division, and hero to numerous musicians, will be presenting the JD Set this year. Peter says: Im really looking forward to meeting some of these young guns at the JD Set events. New up-and-coming talent is something I think it is really important to make time for. I might even get on stage to join them for a track or two!

Air Traffic are a piano-infused, indie band whos brand of Bournemouth-baked rock has hit the nations airwaves of Radio 1, and XFM and our TV screens thanks to Jools Holland. Their career, like Keane and Coldplay started with a single released on Club Fandangos label and they are now signed to the behemoth EMI.

Lightspeed Champion will bring a semi-acoustic sound to proceedings at The Luminaire, with country-rock and folk-pop flourishes throughout. The genial creative force behind Lightspeed Champion, Dev Hynes, is perhaps best known as the guitarist in precocious trio Test Icicles. The split allowed him to focus on the sweetly melodic emotional fare that\'s closer to his soul though.

Friendly Fires are inspired by My Bloody Valentine and are forging a reputation for pacey, rhythmic, full-sounding indie rock. Some put them into the Nu-Rave bracket but the band see themselves as making razor-sharp post punk. This event, alongside future JD Sets, will form part of a bespoke Channel 4 series to be broadcast in 2008. Peter Hook will be joined by Channel 4 TV Presenter Rick Edwards and a panel of music industry aficionados who will discuss whether these bands are fit to take on the heady mantle of musical icons of the future.

Vincent Vincent & The Villains make vintage sounding rock n roll, raw and guitar driven. They have graced the page of style bibles because they fuse a sharp look with music that has depth, integrity and catchy pop sensibility. The Courteeners are one of the most hotly tipped bands of 2007. Their debut single sold out via pre-order on Amazon, helping to bring them to the attention of Polydor who have now signed them. This Manchester indie rock band are touring with The Coral and picking up rave reviews as they go along.

Heartache and Jack Daniels. Good sex, bad sex, guitars. Sweet love songs and dirty, chugging tunes. The occasional bubble of self-pity blitzed by a nasty riff, and the odd spot of lechery justified by the fact that, well, we all get the horn - so why pretendy The New York Fund have all the soulful rock \'n \'roll ingredients that have always been and will always be.

Singer Joe McAdam displays the cocky passion and gentle poetry that only a Glaswegian who thinks he should have grown up in the American South could have. Jim on bass and Leo on drums drive the band like a rusty tractor with a Ferrari engine, and Adrian makes those of us whove ever tried and failed to learn guitar realise why we gave up.

As well as indulging in the obligatory rock pastimes of drinking, bowling and beard-growing, The New York Fund have spent a year priming their public at a plethora of gigs around the UK (headlining, and supporting The Hold Steady, Ed Harcourt, M.Ward, Modest Mouse, OK Go, and Captain). They have wowed audiences at a dozen festivals this summer, including Glastonbury, T in the Park, Guilfest and the V Festival. Everyone who sees this band live is converted get on the dirty trail with The New York Fund.

On their fourth release Frog Eyes stretch their trademark sound further around the evolving, inspired compositions of singer/guitarist Carey Mercer. With \'Tears of the Valedictorian\', the Vancouver quartet has crafted a dense work that breathes and seethes with an energy all its own. Though on the surface Mercer\'s lyrics hold an extremely bleak world view, at its core this is vital, hopeful music by a group of musicians seemingly playing with a single mind.

Main support are Fireworks Night.

Fireworks Night have made two albums. The first is called \'It\'s A Wide, Wide Sea\' and dates from 2003. The second is \'As Fools We Are\' and was released earlier this year. If you jumble up some of things that have been said about them you get the following:

\"A big cult seductively trod somewhere between a ukulele-powered folk-shanty and a Parisian cafe busker. Even then they sounded like no-one, slyly nicking subtle traces of timeless majesty. Sated, delirious from this Masque of the Red Death they then seep their way into your subconscious. You get the feeling that there isnt a single noise. As the journey continues it seems no light is going to appear. Full of doom, you this restless gem are found in grace, in the manner of a siren, luring unwitting sailors to an awe rapt doom. Lavished with love and violence, raw and exposed on a winter morning, you get the feeling that elemental spirits are obvious. They tell this story wonderfully well. Just bring your ears.\"

Fireworks Night have developed a hardcore following through support shows with artists such as St Vincent, David Thomas Broughton, The Mules, Emmy The Great, Johnny Flynn and more.

Darren Hayman celebrates the release of his second solo album - \'Secondary Modern\' - since dissolving independent legends and John Peel favourites Hefner in 2002. During that time Hayman has also managed to release 7 EPs, 2 singles and an acclaimed electronica album with his short-lived band The French as well as releasing a double album of 43 unreleased Hefner songs.

\'Secondary Modern\' marks a long awaited return to the sparse folk pop sound of earlier Hefner recordings, and was recorded spontaneously in 12 days at Soup Studios in Shoreditch (also recently home to Television Personalities and Comet Gain). The studio lies underneath the Duke of Uke shop and Darren made good use of Ukuleles, Banjos, Mandolins, and Fiddles and these songs.

Darren also made use of the open door policy of his new band \'Secondary Modern\' to include contributions from many of his friends. Guests on this album include; seventies reclusive legend John Howard, avant brass man Terry Edwards, folk-tronica elder men Ellis Island Sound as well as members of bright new sparks; Let\'s Wrestle, The Wave Pictures and Fanfarlo.

The main attraction here, however, is Darren\'s lyrics as he continues to plough an idiosyncratic furrow through the modern British urban landscape. Subject matter here includes declining standards of art education in secondary schools (\'Art and Design\'), a love affair from the perspective of a Lacoste logo (\'Crocodile\'), doomed school re-unions (\'Pupil Most Likely\') and cheap high street engagement rings (\'Elizabeth Duke\').

Darren is disappointed and in love with the world and the people he sings about. This album isn\'t big, brash, or loud mouthed: rather it is simple, articulate, funny, robust and made with love.

A special double-headline event for the remarkable Irish singer/songwriter, Adrian Crowley and for the equally remarkable Austin TX songwriter Danny Schmidt.

Crowley has recently released the single \'Bless Our Tiny Hearts\' on Fence and follows the same hallowed path as long time collaborator James Yorkston into bleak and beautiful folk. His forthcoming LP (out soon on Tin Angel) cements Crowleys reputation as one of the most consistent songwriters around today with tales about the seas and oceans highlighting the natural depth of his music. A wonderful live act who has performed at the Green Man & Homefires festivals and toured with Adem, Hood, James Yorkston, Damon & Naomi and Jose Gonzales.

Dannys a songwriters songwriter -- with a literacy and complexity, and an underlying humanity, rare in this age of sound bite attention span marketeering. His tunes are wire frames draped with sheets of poetry.

Theyre not your typical Texas singer/songwriter colloquial polaroid trail diaries. And theyd make lousy beer commercials.

And it all leaves you with that Leonard Cohen after-taste, that theres something here worth studying as much as listening to.

Those arent holistic comparisons, just commonalities and contextual descriptions. Cause more than any particular shared virtue, Danny has a quality common to all these preeminent writers: he has his own unique voice. He doesnt sound like any of those guys at all, really. He doesnt sound like anybody youve heard yet. Truly.

Stylistally and musically, Dannys songs range from deeply-rooted Appalachian mountain gospel to haunted English balladry, from syncopated Piedmont country blues to vagabond 60s protest folk-stumpery -- all in an edgy contemporary blend.

He performs solo, just his voice and his guitar. And all his records live up to a strict writers aesthetic: let the songs themselves stand out front, and well lit. There are sparse backdrops of harmony vocals, strings, and accordion -- and a little touch of this and a tiny pinch of that -- all tastefully placed and painted for the benefit of the songs.

Take the time to sit and listen when you get the chance. Its the kind of music youll want to envelop yourself in at 2am, after a couple drinks, a little loose and strangely attuned, and with the lyrics on your lap so you can follow along, line by line and turn by turn.

The Young Gods constantly reinvent music, whether by revolutionizing samplers in their first albums (The Young Gods and Red Water/lEau Rouge), transcending Kurt Weill (Play Kurt Weill), signing their telluric masterpiece (TV Sky), moving away from guitars (Only Heaven), plunging into nineties electronica (Second Nature), ambient in the vein of labels such as Warp (Heaven Deconstruction), or releasing an album influenced by Brian Enos generative music (Music for Artificial Clouds). They avoid routine, bounce back, start new challenges and projects, feed their souls and continue the exploration of new territories.

In recent years the Young Gods have played with a symphonic orchestra to celebrate their 20th anniversary; re-written the score of the film Woodstock then played it live in Geneva for the Fête de la Musique; collaborated with anthropologist Jeremy Narby (a sonic conference entitled Amazonia Ambient Project); worked with the Musée des Sciences de Genève for the Aquanaute project; and have played some acoustic gigs.

These numerous collaborations and projects allow the Young Gods to stay fresh. This is why the new album Super Ready / Fragmenté sounds so rock and filled with energy. The cover suggests a gun, which is a clue to the Young Gods position in todays world. Treichler, Trontin, and Comet deplore the way in which violence has become a feature of everyday life.

Franz explains: In Switzerland, recent statistics have shown that we can account for the exact number of dogs whereas no one has any idea even approximately of the amount of weapons. The Young Gods exist to suggest and share emotions and impressions without conveying a specific message. The three of us believe in the huge suggestive power of music. The violent aspect of the album is our own way of reacting to the current socio-political context.

Supporting is fellow-Swiss Sophie Hunger, whom The Luminaire was utterly beguiled by in Zurich, earlier this year.

Sophie Hungers musical life reads like a fairy tale. Totally unknown a few months ago, the 23 year old Swiss singer has since shared stages with some of the countrys most successful artists, from Erik Truffaz to the Young Gods, even playing with Stefan Eicher. Sophie Hunger owes this instant success as much to her incredible talent as to the word of mouth that followed every one of her performances. Her album was recorded in just a few weeks, she put it out on her own label and very quickly became the scene and the critics darling. For everybody who has seen or heard her, she is THE revelation 2007.

\'Sketches on Sea\' is a very personal and original album, the musical directions are limitless, from traditional folk songwriting bathed in jazzy moods to soul balladry, Sophie Hungers musical universe is amazingly flourished, nourished by an exceptionaly fragile yet mature voice. More than a basic formula, this ability to cross genres is totally unique and showcases the singers many talents. For Sketches On Sea, she collaborated with a great number of amazing musicians, from a trombone player to a flamenco guitarist, without ever sounding like a soulless group of sessionists. Sophies technical prowesses can lead her anywhere and allow her to do things that nobody else could get away with.

Somewhere between Norah Jones and Cat Power, Miss Hunger is inventing her own classic, yet modern sound, pushing back musical borders on the way. Don\'t You Wonder Sometimes returns to The Luminaire for a second outing with their heady mix of live acts, hostesses, DJ sets and video art for your aural and viewing pleasure.

Arguably the first example of surrealist cinema, \'The Seashell and the Clergyman\' is a dark erotically-charged film, a hallucinatory story of tormented desire, guilt and conflict. With daring imagery, startling effects and editing and a sense of the absurd, it was banned by the British Board of Film Censors with the words: \"The film is so cryptic as to be almost meaningless. If there is a meaning, it is doubtless objectionable.\" (BBFC 1928).

Whilst the writer of the piece, Antonin Artaud, had to be ejected from the cinema for hurling abuse at the director Germaine Dulac during the film\'s premier, it has since quite rightly taken it\'s place as one of the most celebrated avant-garde movies of all time and is a direct predecessor of classics such as Bunuel and Dali\'s \'Un Chien Andalou\'. Acclaimed post-rockers \"Minima, whose performance at Latitude Festival this summer was a true highlight of the weekend\'s Film and Music tent, provide a suitably evocative soundtrack.

As the original singer and main songwriter in Ultravox, John Foxx created the UK\'s first synthesizer-rock group, working with Brian Eno while David Bowie mixed conventional and leftfield influences together on his 1977 album \'Low\'.

\"\'From Trash\' finds him and Gordon lurking in arty electro Elysium, a place where ennui-laden, robotic vocals glide into throbbing, thumping backbeats; \'A Million Cars\' almost bursts into \'Tainted Love\'. Born on June 9, 1964, in Berwick, Maine, Slaid Cleaves grew up amid dairy farms, abandoned sawmills and the ever-encroaching suburban strip malls. The first of four kids, Cleaves was picking though the family record collection at the age of three, beginning a lifelong fascination with the music of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, The Everly Brothers and Woody Guthrie.

He began his career as a \"busker,\" singing on the streets of Cork, Ireland, while attending college there in 1985. Returning to the U.S., he formed the roots-rocking Moxie Men in 1989, playing extensively throughout New England and winning a semi-finalist slot in Musician Magazine\'s best unsigned band contest. Having outgrown the small but vital music scene in Portland, Maine, he landed in the roots-rock Mecca of Austin, Texas, in 1991. There, he rose swiftly through the ranks of the local singer-songwriter scene.

Cleaves wrote most of the songs for 2004\'s Wishbones while hiding out in a country cabin. He also aimed to make more of a band album, one that rocked harder than his past efforts. Wishbones was produced by Gurf Morlix.

Following September\'s sell out Iceland Airwaves festival preview party in London, Reykjavik Nights is pleased to announce another date in the Capital featuring Iceland\'s most exciting electro groups and more free Reyka vodka than you can shake a barbecued puffin at.

The evening\'s headline band, Bloodgroup, are an established name on the Icelandic live music circuit, having been formed in 2005 by ringleader Raggi along with members of his family and their friends. Together they formed a band that\'s gained an enviable reputation for playing \"powerful and funky rock-influenced electro-dance-pop\" (The Reykjavik Grapevine) at summer festivals around the world and, to top off a perfect year for the band, they\'ve recently recorded and released their debut album \'Sticky Situation\' to the acclaim of the local music press.

Sometime, the evening\'s first supporting band, are the Crosby, Still, Nash & Young of Icelandic dance music. Not The Same Old Blue Crap & Loose Records join forces and reignite the Nashville Babylon club night. While delving deep into the traditional country themes of pathos, humour, women, whiskey, murder, death, disease and destitution, Nashville Babylon will once again stretch the genre to breaking point.

The Felice Brothers are Simone, Ian and James Felice, born along the Hudson River in upstate New York plus an adopted runaway dice thrower called Christmas. Unschooled illegal street/subway musicians from the start, their distinct brand of songwriting and the lawless sound they\'ve forged has earned them comparisons to Woodie Guthrie, Neil Young, Walt Whitman, Bob Dylan and James Brown. They now all live, tour, sing, write and gamble together in a 1987 special education bus and tour the endless highways of the United States. Their debut album, \'Tonight at The Arizona\' is out now on Loose Records.

Co-headliners, Alan Tyler, wrote the UK country music book. First with his band The Rockingbirds in the early nineties who trail blazed a path for credible UK country, then with his Sunday club Come Down Meet The Folks, which set the standard for the many Country clubs that followed in its wake and now with his current band, Alan Tyler & The Lost Sons of Littlefield . Alan still draws musical inspiration from his heroes George Jones, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings (from whose birthplace, Alans band take their name) and interweaves it with stories from Middle England and suburbia, creating a quintessentially English take on country.

This show celebrates the release of Alans new album, \'So Far\' on Hanky Panky Records which features a fine and mighty collection of acoustic versions of Alans own material and country favourites.

Hey Negrita blend country, rockabilly and honky tonk into a heady sour mash cocktail. They have featured in a Channel 4 documentary, \'The Hum Below\' and toured with Alabama 3. They have a new record lined up for release in 2008 to follow the critically acclaimed \'The Buzz Above\' and \'We Are Catfish\'.
