Click here for an absolutely free, no-strings attached O\'Death track, and here to watch the video.

\"O\'Death uses old methods (in the folk/traditional vein of music, the sort that tells stories) to make beautiful new sounds that borrow as much from Pixies, The Pogues, and Tom Waits as they do toothless drunk vagabonds wandering through the mountains. This is spastic, timeless music you can\'t possibly ever tire of.\" [The Deli Magazine, US]

Fve guys, maybe three shirts between them, take to the stage. There’s a banjo, a fiddle, a drum set littered with gas cans, chains, and broken cymbals. Then they all start howling, stomping; it’s an anachronistic jug band party in a junkyard with sing-along hooks and weathered vocals from another time.

\"Picture Tom Waits and Iggy Pop together in a musical touring edition of Deliverance and you might come close to figuring out what I\'m talking about.\" [Treblezine.com]

Their fans, an ever-expanding congregation, sing along and follow the band with an almost religious fervor, and as vocalist Greg Jamie’s eyes roll back into his head there’s a sense that something almost sinisterly spiritual has overtaken everyone in the room. This is the world of O\'Death.

\"If your idea of a good time is a crowd of folks moshing to the sound of banjo feedback and Savage Republic drumming, then live O\'Death is your cup of moonshine.\" [Village Voice, NYC]

Originally formed in 2003 while the members attended SUNY Purchase, the band – with Jamie on guitar and vocals, Gabe Darling on banjo, David Rogers-Berry on drums, Jesse Newman on bass, and Bob Pycior on fiddle – self-released their first album in 2004. They quickly took to the task of stirring up a wholly original scene of NY musicians with their reverently twisted take on Americana filtered through a wealth of musical influences as divergent as Bill Monroe, Prince, Dock Boggs, Neil Young, The Microphones, and The Misfits via a series of shows at the now defunct Apocalypse Lounge.

\"This New York band draws from the starkness and spiritual purity of Appalachian folk, the noisemongering of punk and the rowdy theatricality of Tom Waits. With quiet pluckings of banjo and angry, anarchic hollers, its songs jumble the sacred and profane\" [The New York Times]

As they gathered the songs for their second LP, \'Head Home\', the band perfected their mesmerizing and riotous stage presence and took to turning their share of heads across the country, playing over 100 shows in 2006, and gracing the stage alongside acts including Battles, Dr. Dog, Art Brut, Langhorne Slim, The Big Sleep, and Old Time Relijun.

\"Like a hometown carnival, O\'Death is dirty, absurd and absolutely enthralling.\" [Austin Chronicle]

With the re-release of \'Head Home\', the critically acclaimed NY act has created a perfect companion to their spellbinding live show. Part southern gothic spiritual, part moonshine fueled hoedown, these recordings, now presented with new remixes done by the band and Billy Pavone, are a timeless addition to the canon of weird old America.

\"There are plenty of folk and country-tinged bands floating around America these days, but few are able to take Americana and evolve it toward something interesting or unique, something that begs to be heard, something catchy enough to dance (or stumble) to. O\'Death manages to do just that, and also manages to take us to that dark and haunted place inside us that takes such enthusiastic satisfaction in being dark and haunted.\" [Portland Mercury News]

And don\'t forget to join our pre-party in The Kilburn Bar next door, from 8.00 [see the foot of the page for more details]

Every Saturday night, Jon from FC/Kahuna and This Time of Night will be joined by friends from the wide, weird and wonderful world of electronic music for an evening of dancing drinking and falling over

The only music policy we have is that we don\'t have one; if it\'s good and makes you wanna dance is all that matters to us.

An accomplished and varied crew of top DJ talent will make sure the party\'s always on. Expect the likes of (in no particular order) Paul \'Phones\' Epworth, Ashley Beedle, Cagedbaby, Nathan Detroit, Barry Ashworth, Richard Norris, Justin Robertson, Dan Lywood, Jon Abblett and many more.

As one half of FC/Kahuna, Jon is one of the true pioneers of electronic dance music and has an impressive body of work behind him. The critically acclaimed FC/Kahuna album, \'Machine Says Yes\', went on to sell over 50,000 copies and includes such landmark tracks as \'Glitterball\', \'Hayling\' and the title track itself.

As a DJ Jon has helped to create three of the most memorable London clubs of the last 10 years. The legendary Big Kahuna Burger from 1995 featured many of today\'s biggest names in music including The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and Death In Vegas.

Headstart at Turnmills followed in 1999, a truly groundbreaking club experience that championed forward thinking electronic music. Dave Clarke, Andrew Weatherall, Josh Wink and Justin Robertson each joined Jon as monthly residents and Headstart provided the blueprint for many of the tech-edged nights out there.

Up next was 21st Century Bodyrockers in collaboration with Damian Lazarus and the City Rockers label, and once again Jon was at the forefront of pushing new music; Soulwax, Tiga and James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem all appeared here long before becoming the massive acts they are today.

Jon is currently in the studio working on his \'This Time Of Night\' project and has recently completed remixes for Mika, Ali Love, The Rumble Strips and Armand Van Helden.

And before MDBTYD kicks off...

EAT, DRINK & BOOGIE: the official warm-up to Jon Kahuna\'s new weekly party at The Luminaire [literally next door] with Edward Adoo mixing up House, Electro, Breaks, Hip Hop, Funk, Drum & Bass and other styles. The action kicks off from 8.00 until midnight, then rolls on up to The Luminaire with Jon and guests to include Paul \'Phones\' Epworth, Ashley Beedle, Cagedbaby, Nathan Detroit, Barry Ashworth, Richard Norris, Justin Robertson, Dan Lywood, Jon Abblett and many more.

Al James, the band\'s leader and songwriter, rises to the challenge and produces their best, most accessible and most consistent work to date.

In James\' own words: \"There are many types of music that we pulled from on \'You Can’t
Win\' - Chet Baker’s cool jazz, Yo La Tengo’s broken grooves, Palace Brothers’ country gothic, Meddle-era Pink Floyd. It all somehow fits together better than any collection of songs we’ve released. It’s a rougher, freer Dolorean captured on a recording. And thankfully, it’s no longer just one hardened heart singing \'You Can’t Win\'; there’s a chorus of us reassuringly combining our voices with the same words, but a different message; “It’s okay, quit trying so hard, You Can’t Win.”

\"What a night! Totally insane evening beginning with a screening .. then delivering a through extrapolation of what an experimental noise band should sound like. They do not get bogged down in drone, or carried away with electronics. It is the mix of organic sounds and improvised music and theatrics that makes it make sense. Utilizing steel bars, a giant buzz saw blade, a chain saw, an oil drum, a chainsaw, stand up drums, a drill, an angle grinder, a female accordion player and a local knife wielding/sharpening chef. What more do you wanty\"

As a founder member of Faust, Jean-Hervé Peron was instrumental in doing nothing less than changing the face of rock music.

\"Anyone who\'s loved the last half-decade\'s re-invention of the guitar (Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine et al.) will instantly recognise Faust as a prime ancestor of \'our\' music. \"Faust are essential, not just as a history lesson, but as a living legacy and as a reproach to an underachieving age.\" [Melody Maker]

As sunseastar, members of RBE and Bourbonese Qualk, Simon Crab and Andy Wilson have been making electronic music for over 25 years. In their incarnation as sunseastar they create music from computer processed location recordings.

sunseastar will release their first album, \'Fjaerland\', later this year, based on recordings made in Norway and the UK.

DJing is DJ Tango-Mango of The Komische Club and Drones Club.

For the last 11 years, the Kosmische Club has established itself as a place to hear some of the most forward-thinking, truly independent and downright amazing music ever made. Cherished by the open-minded, loved by the chronically energetic, and only occasionally visited by old men with beards, the Kosmische club\'s remit slowly began to include the best danceable, experimental music, non-chin-strokey electronica, and classic underground tracks.

The Drones Club: \"We\'re pretty broad minded here, and if you stop short of smashing the piano, there isn\'t much you can do at the Drones that will cause the raised eyebrow and the sharp intake of breath\".

PG Wodehouse: \"Young Men In Spats.\"

The Drones Club is home to harmonic drones and jollity of all stripes, inviting artists, performers and audience to participate in a world apart from mundanity. We prefer to think cosmically, and act musically. Or is it the other way aroundy

07 November - BASQUIAT STRINGS + Vincent Oliver + Matthew Rozeik with Triggerset Collective visuals + Ben Eshmade [DJ, Arctic Circle] + Infantjoy [DJ]

The Luminaire and ServiceAV present
Peter Hook, legendary low-slung bass player with seminal bands New Order and Joy Division, and hero to numerous musicians, will be presenting the JD Set this year. Peter says: “I’m really looking forward to meeting some of these young guns at the JD Set events. New up-and-coming talent is something I think it is really important to make time for. I might even get on stage to join them for a track or two!”

The split allowed him to focus on the sweetly melodic emotional fare that\'s closer to his soul though.

The JD Set is a series of nationwide live music events featuring cutting-edge talent that’s storming the underground. Jack Daniel’s will be bringing together this staggering line up of artists by way of celebrating their well-respected musical heritage that spans over a century.

Vincent Vincent & The Villains make vintage sounding rock n roll, raw and guitar driven. They have graced the page of style bibles because they fuse a sharp look with music that has depth, integrity and catchy pop sensibility.

The Courteeners are one of the most hotly tipped bands of 2007. Their debut single sold out via pre-order on Amazon, helping to bring them to the attention of Polydor who have now signed them. This Manchester indie rock band are touring with The Coral and picking up rave reviews as they go along.

Heartache and Jack Daniels. Good sex, bad sex, guitars. Sweet love songs and dirty, chugging tunes. The occasional bubble of self-pity blitzed by a nasty riff, and the odd spot of lechery justified by the fact that, well, we all get the horn - so why pretendy The New York Fund have all the soulful rock \'n \'roll ingredients that have always been and will always be.

Singer Joe McAdam displays the cocky passion and gentle poetry that only a Glaswegian who thinks he should have grown up in the American South could have. Jim on bass and Leo on drums drive the band like a rusty tractor with a Ferrari engine, and Adrian makes those of us who’ve ever tried and failed to learn guitar realise why we gave up.

As well as indulging in the obligatory rock pastimes of drinking, bowling and beard-growing, The New York Fund have spent a year priming their public at a plethora of gigs around the UK (headlining, and supporting The Hold Steady, Ed Harcourt, M.Ward, Modest Mouse, OK Go, and Captain). They have wowed audiences at a dozen festivals this summer, including Glastonbury, T in the Park, Guilfest and the V Festival.
Everyone who sees this band live is converted – get on the dirty trail with The New York Fund.

With \'Tears of the Valedictorian\', the Vancouver quartet has crafted a dense work that breathes and seethes with an energy all its own. Though on the surface Mercer\'s lyrics hold an extremely bleak world view, at its core this is vital, hopeful music by a group of musicians seemingly playing with a single mind.

Main support are Fireworks Night.

Fireworks Night have made two albums. The first is called \'It\'s A Wide, Wide Sea\' and dates from 2003. The second is \'As Fools We Are\' and was released earlier this year. If you jumble up some of things that have been said about them you get the following:

\"A big cult seductively trod somewhere between a ukulele-powered folk-shanty and a Parisian cafe busker. Even then they sounded like no-one, slyly nicking subtle traces of timeless majesty. Sated, delirious from this Masque of the Red Death they then seep their way into your subconscious. You get the feeling that there isn’t a single noise. As the journey continues it seems no light is going to appear. Full of doom, you – this restless gem – are found in grace, in the manner of a siren, luring unwitting sailors to an awe rapt doom. Lavished with love and violence, raw and exposed on a winter morning, you get the feeling that elemental spirits are obvious. They tell this story wonderfully well. Just bring your ears.\"

Fireworks Night have developed a hardcore following through support shows with artists such as St Vincent, David Thomas Broughton, The Mules, Emmy The Great, Johnny Flynn and more.

\'As Fools We Are\' is out now on Kartel.

12 November - DARREN HAYMAN + Guests

Track & Field presents
Darren Hayman celebrates the release of his second solo album - \'Secondary Modern\' - since dissolving independent legends and John Peel favourites Hefner in 2002. During that time Hayman has also managed to release 7 EPs, 2 singles and an acclaimed electronica album with his short-lived band The French as well as releasing a double album of 43 unreleased Hefner songs.

\'Secondary Modern\' marks a long awaited return to the sparse folk pop sound of earlier Hefner recordings, and was recorded spontaneously in 12 days at Soup Studios in Shoreditch (also recently home to Television Personalities and Comet Gain). The studio lies underneath the Duke of Uke shop and Darren made good use of Ukuleles, Banjos, Mandolins, and Fiddles and these songs.

Darren also made use of the open door policy of his new band \'Secondary Modern\' to include contributions from many of his friends. Guests on this album include; seventies reclusive legend John Howard, avant brass man Terry Edwards, folk-tronica elder men Ellis Island Sound as well as members of bright new sparks; Let\'s Wrestle, The Wave Pictures and Fanfarlo.

The main attraction here, however, is Darren\'s lyrics as he continues to plough an idiosyncratic furrow through the modern British urban landscape. Subject matter here includes declining standards of art education in secondary schools (\'Art and Design\'), a love affair from the perspective of a Lacoste logo (\'Crocodile\'), doomed school re-unions (\'Pupil Most Likely\') and cheap high street engagement rings (\'Elizabeth Duke\').

Darren is disappointed and in love with the world and the people he sings about. This album isn\'t big, brash, or loud mouthed: rather it is simple, articulate, funny, robust and made with love.

15 November - KID CARPET + Guests

WE\'RE VERY SORRY TO SAY THAT DUE TO UNAVOIDABLE CIRCUMSTANCES THIS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED. A special double-headline event for the remarkable Irish singer/songwriter, Adrian Crowley and for the equally remarkable Austin TX songwriter <a href=\"http://www.myspace.com/dannyschmidt target=\"_new\">Danny Schmidt.

Crowley has recently released the single \'Bless Our Tiny Hearts\' on Fence and follows the same hallowed path as long time collaborator James Yorkston into bleak and beautiful folk. His forthcoming LP (out soon on Tin Angel) cements Crowley’s reputation as one of the most consistent songwriters around today with tales about the seas and oceans highlighting the natural depth of his music. A wonderful live act who has performed at the Green Man & Homefires festivals and toured with Adem, Hood, James Yorkston, Damon & Naomi and Jose Gonzales.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Ryan Adams named Crowley one of his favourite underground songwriters. Here\'s what some other people have been saying about this ground-breaking artist . . .

FROM LOSING TODAY:<br.
\". . . the most brooding moment of shadow filled pop this side of Black Heart Procession. Quite personal and quite simply perfect.\"

FROM DREAM MAGAZINE (USA):
\"Frozen into a snowbank of deep sorrow. Slow ages of exquisitely rendered details and craft supporting these gentle soft-spoken insular folk songs.

THE NEW YORKER (USA):
\"Crowley transcends the limitations of his chosen genre thanks to a deep, captivating voice and a light touch.\"

PLAN B MAGAZINE:
\"Like Nick Drake strung-out on the minor chords and major catastrophes in the lives of Low.\"

HOT PRESS:
\"If there were any justice in the world, Crowley\'s time would be right now, for this music is consummately, overwhelmingly and blindingly gorgeous.\"

Schmidt is similarly gifted.

Singout Magazine called <a href=\"http://www.myspace.com/dannyschmidt target=\"_new\">Danny Schmidt the best new songwriter they\'d heard in 15 years. Indie-Music Magazine said Danny just releases masterpiece after masterpiece. Here\'s why . . .

Danny’s a songwriter’s songwriter -- with a literacy and complexity, and an underlying humanity, rare in this age of sound bite attention span marketeering. His tunes are wire frames draped with sheets of poetry.

They’re not your typical Texas singer/songwriter colloquial polaroid trail diaries. And they’d make lousy beer commercials.

He has some of the qualities of the greats, though -- from Townes Van Zandt’s ageless and understated sincerity, to Dylan’s topical relevance and wry sharp eye for the allusively obvious, to Nick Drakes’ quiet spiritual quest and sense that each song was plucked whole from a tree more than labored over, line-by-line with pen and ink. And it all leaves you with that Leonard Cohen after-taste, that there’s something here worth studying as much as listening to.

Those aren’t holistic comparisons, just commonalities and contextual descriptions. Cause more than any particular shared virtue, Danny has a quality common to all these preeminent writers: he has his own unique voice. He doesn’t sound like any of those guys at all, really. He doesn’t sound like anybody you’ve heard yet. Truly.

Stylistally and musically, Danny’s songs range from deeply-rooted Appalachian mountain gospel to haunted English balladry, from syncopated Piedmont country blues to vagabond 60’s protest folk-stumpery -- all in an edgy contemporary blend.

He performs solo, just his voice and his guitar. And all his records live up to a strict writer’s aesthetic: let the songs themselves stand out front, and well lit. There are sparse backdrops of harmony vocals, strings, and accordion -- and a little touch of this and a tiny pinch of that -- all tastefully placed and painted for the benefit of the songs.

Take the time to sit and listen when you get the chance. It’s the kind of music you’ll want to envelop yourself in at 2am, after a couple drinks, a little loose and strangely attuned, and with the lyrics on your lap so you can follow along, line by line and turn by turn.

\"I\'ve not felt a performance with this much intensity since I saw Neil Young solo years ago, nor have I heard songwriting with this much subtlety of craftsmanship since Leonard Cohen. I was completely floored.\" [Filter]

With the gravitational pull of the sun, he is, perhaps the best new songwriter I’ve heard in the last 15 years.\" [Rich Warren, Sing Out! magazine]

Cougar was formed in 2003 in a cold Madison, Wisconsin basement and slowly, carefully, via a revolving door of like-minded musicians centred around the renowned Youngblood Brass Band, began to craft what they call Emergency Rock, each song a collage of voices and instruments, evolving together, interacting, growing and expanding, always moving, always beautiful.

\"When \'Law\' came to its conclusion, I had a moment of traquility engulfing me, until I panicked, searching for the repeat setting.\" [Outsideleft]

It brings to mind - in places - Four Tet, Sigur Ros, Tortoise, Nick Drake and Radiohead. And also The Sea And Cake, though given that it was mixed by John McEntire, who plays with both Tortoise and The Sea & Cake, that\'s maybe not such a surprise.

\"Law is a nearly flawless example of intelligent musical design.\" [XLR8R]

Cougar released their debut full length album, \'Law\', on Layered Music and PIAS in 2005 and early last year, they played their UK show here at Luminaire. It was really something special. In fact, we\'d go as far to say that this show tonight is the most anticipated here in a long time. From the minute they walked out the door we\'ve been trying to get them back.

Please, don\'t miss this.

\"This album has so much beauty that words escape me.\" [Liability Webzine]

\"Instruments have the guile to be bright, melodic, and well…fun. Frankly, in a musical world ruled by affected dissonance and technique over imagination, they’re a breath of fresh air.\"

19 November - THE YOUNG GODS play acoustic + Sophie Hunger + One Imaginary Girl [DJ]

The Luminaire presents

\"As ever, The Young Gods rebirth rock music.\" [David Stubbs, The Wire]

Back in 1985, it took some nerve to form a trio around a sampler. But The Young Gods were never afraid of anything. By creating a novel musical grammar indebted to rock, industrial, classical, baroque, ambient and electronic music, the Swiss band formed by Franz Treichler is still impressively pertinent and consistent twenty-two years on.

\'Super Ready / Fragmenté\', their dazzling new album, allies power and subtlety in an unprecedented manner, confirming that the Young Gods are more than ever in tune with their times.

\"The Young Gods stick to their template and still manage to sound a head of the game.\" [Chris Campion, The Observer]

Adventurers, pioneers and mad scientists, the Young Gods are still an essential reference in today’s music. Mike Patton, The Chemical Brothers, Maynard James Keenan (Tool) or The Edge (U2), all claim the heritage of the young Helvetian gods. But don’t tell Franz Treichler, Al Comet or Bernard Trontin. The Young Gods consider that humility and creativiy go together.

\"The Young Gods have an ultramodern architectural take on rock, exposing its stone origins, but also bending its girders at new angles.\" [The Wire]

The Young Gods constantly reinvent music, whether by revolutionizing samplers in their first albums (The Young Gods and Red Water/l’Eau Rouge), transcending Kurt Weill (Play Kurt Weill), signing their telluric masterpiece (TV Sky), moving away from guitars (Only Heaven), plunging into nineties electronica (Second Nature), ambient in the vein of labels such as Warp (Heaven Deconstruction), or releasing an album influenced by Brian Eno’s generative music (Music for Artificial Clouds). They avoid routine, bounce back, start new challenges and projects, feed their souls and continue the exploration of new territories.

In recent years the Young Gods have played with a symphonic orchestra to celebrate their 20th anniversary; re-written the score of the film Woodstock then played it live in Geneva for the Fête de la Musique; collaborated with anthropologist Jeremy Narby (a sonic conference entitled Amazonia Ambient Project); worked with the Musée des Sciences de Genève for the Aquanaute project; and have played some acoustic gigs.

These numerous collaborations and projects allow the Young Gods to stay fresh. This is why the new album Super Ready / Fragmenté sounds so rock and filled with energy. The cover suggests a gun, which is a clue to the Young God’s position in today’s world. Treichler, Trontin, and Comet deplore the way in which violence has become a feature of everyday life.

Franz explains: “In Switzerland, recent statistics have shown that we can account for the exact number of dogs whereas no one has any idea – even approximately – of the amount of weapons. The Young Gods exist to suggest and share emotions and impressions without conveying a specific message. The three of us believe in the huge suggestive power of music. The violent aspect of the album is our own way of reacting to the current socio-political context.”

\'Super Ready / Fragmenté\' is a major album. It conveys urgency and unrest, and makes for venomous, troubling and passionate listening.

Supporting is fellow-Swiss Sophie Hunger, whom The Luminaire was utterly beguiled by in Zurich, earlier this year.

Sophie Hunger’s musical life reads like a fairy tale. Totally unknown a few months ago, the 23 year old Swiss singer has since shared stages with some of the country’s most successful artists, from Erik Truffaz to the Young Gods, even playing with Stefan Eicher. Sophie Hunger owes this instant success as much to her incredible talent as to the word of mouth that followed every one of her performances. Her album was recorded in just a few weeks, she put it out on her own label and very quickly became the scene and the critic’s darling. For everybody who has seen or heard her, she is THE revelation 2007.

\'Sketches on Sea\' is a very personal and original album, the musical directions are limitless, from traditional folk songwriting bathed in jazzy moods to soul balladry, Sophie Hunger’s musical universe is amazingly flourished, nourished by an exceptionaly fragile yet mature voice. More than a basic formula, this ability to cross genres is totally unique and showcases the singer’s many talents. For Sketches On Sea, she collaborated with a great number of amazing musicians, from a trombone player to a flamenco guitarist, without ever sounding like a soulless group of sessionists. Sophie’s technical prowesses can lead her anywhere and allow her to do things that nobody else could get away with.

Somewhere between Norah Jones and Cat Power, Miss Hunger is inventing her own classic, yet modern sound, pushing back musical borders on the way. On stage, this seemingly directionless direction takes her to even higher grounds, using tempo variations and changing moods whenever she pleases. From an uptempo spokenword blues to a piano ballad, the lady can do anything and seeing how she’s only 23 years old, the future is wide open.

20 November - OH SUSANNA + Guests

VPMG presents
Short stories deliver brief but indelible journeys. A single mouthful of sublime textures, or a window cracked; fresh and sparkling images peeking through. \'Short Stories\' is also the title of Oh Susanna\'s latest release, an intimate series of portraits and journeys that echo the haunting sound of her debut EP.

\'Short Stories\' is a dramatic and compelling collection of songs inspired by both the lives of people in Oh Susanna’s family and by those recorded in 20th Century American writing. It shares personal fables of heroes and antiheroes as if through the lens of a documentary film.

\'Short Stories\' will seduce new listeners and reward the returning. For those who have traveled with her from one album touchstone to the next, there is both continuity and surprise. Literary and cinematic as much as musical, \'Short Stories\' has a natural beauty that both entertains and gives the listener room to roam.

Over the last 10 years, Oh Susanna has garnered critical acclaim and loyal audiences around the world with \'Oh Susanna\' (2003), \'Sleepy Little Sailor\' (2001), \'Johnstown\' (1999), and \'EP\' (1997). She grew up a Canadian with an American passport, staring at the ocean, mountains and railroad tracks through sheets of rain. She sought refuge with song under burnt-out warehouses and in darkened clubs with the promise of guitar twang and a lonesome cry. Along the way she found inspiration in the music of the likes of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, as well as peers Jim Bryson, Sarah Harmer, Neko Case, Ron Sexsmith, Fred Eaglesmith, Eliza Gilkyson, Patti Griffin, and Iris Dement.

21 November - MINIMA + Lautrec + TooLoose

Don\'t You Wonder Sometimes presents
Don\'t You Wonder Sometimes returns to The Luminaire for a second outing with their heady mix of live acts, hostesses, DJ sets and video art for your aural and viewing pleasure.

Arguably the first example of surrealist cinema, \'The Seashell and the Clergyman\' is a dark erotically-charged film, a hallucinatory story of tormented desire, guilt and conflict. With daring imagery, startling effects and editing and a sense of the absurd, it was banned by the British Board of Film Censors with the words: \"The film is so cryptic as to be almost
meaningless. If there is a meaning, it is doubtless objectionable.\" (BBFC 1928).

Whilst the writer of the piece, Antonin Artaud, had to be ejected from the cinema for hurling abuse at the director Germaine Dulac during the film\'s premier, it has since quite rightly taken it\'s place as one of the most celebrated avant-garde movies of all time and is a direct predecessor of classics such as Bunuel and Dali\'s \'Un Chien Andalou\'. Seb Rochford\'s Fulborn Teversham [main support tonight] describe their music as going from hard to soft, quiet to loud, happy to angry, punk to jazz to folk to electro, songs of love and no love, friends and non friends.

Our opening act, Luke Barlow Band, comprises Luke Barlow (piano), Alex Ward (clarinet and guitar), Santiago Horro (double bass) and Mark Holub (drums). \"A hugely enjoyable record\" said The Wire. \"A rich post-modern stew, performed with humour and brio\" said Jazzwise.

\"The combined work of original Ultravox vocalist John Foxx and Manchester\'s electro producer Louis Gordon is a thoughtful journey into electronics, from the Germanic stomp of the title track to the Laurie Anderson washes of \'Never Let Me Go\'. I\'ll give this four out of five.\" [DJ Magazine]

As the original singer and main songwriter in Ultravox, John Foxx created the UK\'s first synthesizer-rock group, working with Brian Eno while David Bowie mixed conventional and leftfield influences together on his 1977 album \'Low\'.

\"\'From Trash\' finds him and Gordon lurking in arty electro Elysium, a place where ennui-laden, robotic vocals glide into throbbing, thumping backbeats; \'A Million Cars\' almost bursts into \'Tainted Love\'. It\'s all leavened with a taste of Kraftwerk, especially the romantic \'Never Let Me Go\'. Beneath the extraterrestrial exterior, Foxx appears to be having a whale of a time.\" [Q Magazine]

In 1980 Foxx recorded his debut solo album \'Metamatic\', a completely electronic set of songs that still influences artists to this day - Klaxons recently described it as a \'visionary\' piece of music. Since then the self-styled \"Quiet Man\" has moved between film-making, graphic design, photography, art exhibitions and of course music, including two electro albums in the past 12 months; \'From Trash\' (2006) and the brand new CD, \'Sideways\' (2007).

\"There are some belters here: \'Another You\' is a quirky pop song, \'Impossible\' is Foxx at his Ultravox best, while \'Never Let Me Go\' is vocoded loveliness. [Future Music]

\"Motorik sequencers, glistening synth pads and lyrics of vague, science fiction dystopia. To wit, the title track is a robotic anthem worthy of The Human League\'s \'Dare\', \'Freeze Frame\' is \'Computer World\'-era Kraftwerk and \'Impossible\' reassembles David Bowie\'s \'Always Crashing In The Same Car\'.\" [Mojo]

25 November - THE RIPPS + Tim Ten Yen + Clanky Robo Gob Jobs + DJ Mike + Emo Dave cartoons

House of Tracks presents
\"An immensely satisfying album. 4/5\" [Mojo]

Born on June 9, 1964, in Berwick, Maine, Slaid Cleaves grew up amid dairy farms, abandoned sawmills and the ever-encroaching suburban strip malls. The first of four kids, Cleaves was picking though the family record collection at the age of three, beginning a lifelong fascination with the music of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, The Everly Brothers and Woody Guthrie.

\"A rare talent.\" [LA Daily News]

He began his career as a \"busker,\" singing on the streets of Cork, Ireland, while attending college there in 1985. Returning to the U.S., he formed the roots-rocking Moxie Men in 1989, playing extensively throughout New England and winning a semi-finalist slot in Musician Magazine\'s best unsigned band contest. Having outgrown the small but vital music scene in Portland, Maine, he landed in the roots-rock Mecca of Austin, Texas, in 1991. There, he rose swiftly through the ranks of the local singer-songwriter scene.

\"Cleaves tells gorgeously compact stories in a voice packed with Texas trail dust.\" [Entertainment Weekly]

\"4/5, Michael Corcoran. [Austin360.com]

In 1992, he won the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival\'s New Folk competition, an award previously given to such striking talents as Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen and Steve Earle. By 1996, he had signed to Rounder Records and released No Angel Knows, which attracted widespread critical acclaim.

\'Broke Down\', which followed in 2000, reached beyond the cult audience he had attracted and gave him a national following. The Austin Chronicle dubbed it \"the first great Texas album of the 21st century,\" while the Chicago Sun-Times noted that he \"has fashioned a timeless yet fresh sound rooted in the best storytelling tradition of the great singer-songwriters.\"

Cleaves wrote most of the songs for 2004\'s Wishbones while hiding out in a country cabin. He also aimed to make more of a band album, one that rocked harder than his past efforts. Wishbones was produced by Gurf Morlix.

28 November - BLOODGROUP + Sometime + Sven Bit

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LINE-UP FOR THIS EVENT HAS NOW CHANGED. Following September\'s sell out Iceland Airwaves festival preview party in London, Reykjavik Nights is pleased to announce another date in the Capital featuring Iceland\'s most exciting electro groups and more free Reyka vodka than you can shake a barbecued puffin at.

The evening\'s headline band, Bloodgroup, are an established name on the Icelandic live music circuit, having been formed in 2005 by ringleader Raggi along with members of his family and their friends. Together they formed a band that\'s gained an enviable reputation for playing \"powerful and funky rock-influenced electro-dance-pop\" (The Reykjavik Grapevine) at summer festivals around the world and, to top off a perfect year for the band, they\'ve recently recorded and released their debut album \'Sticky Situation\' to the acclaim of the local music press.

Sometime, the evening\'s first supporting band, are the Crosby, Still, Nash & Young of Icelandic dance music. Consisting of Danni (synths & electronic drums), Diva De La Rosa (vocals) DJ Dice (turntables & fx) and Oculus (audio manipulations), four famed veterans of the vibrant Icelandic music scene, they released their debut record in October following a miraculous rise to fame in 2007. Sometime sound a little like an updated version of Kraftwerk with gorgeous vocals lashed over the sort of beats that have kept many a bar in Reykjavik bursting until dawn and they are, quite simply, one of Iceland\'s newest and most exciting live dance acts.

Joining Bloodgroup and Sometime we\'re also delighted to welcome Reykjavik-based techno minimalist Sven Bit as the opening act.

The Felice Brothers are Simone, Ian and James Felice, born along the Hudson River in upstate New York plus an adopted runaway dice thrower called Christmas. Unschooled illegal street/subway musicians from the start, their distinct brand of songwriting and the lawless sound they\'ve forged has earned them comparisons to Woodie Guthrie, Neil Young, Walt Whitman, Bob Dylan and James Brown. They now all live, tour, sing, write and gamble together in a 1987 special education bus and tour the endless highways of the United States. Their debut album, \'Tonight at The Arizona\' is out now on Loose Records.

\"Music that slowly ferments until morning, by which time you are ashen and weary and your thoughts grown fuzzy with whiskey. Barnstorming and brilliant.\" [The Guardian]

“The Felice Brothers capture lightning and spin it into harvest gold.” [Vice Magazine]

“Scruffy and scratched Americana that recalls Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and early Springsteen.\" [Time Out]

\"Evoking The Band and Dylan holed up at Big Pink - this is a gripping intro for these shores.\" [Rob Hughes, Uncut]

Co-headliners, Alan Tyler, wrote the UK country music book. First with his band The Rockingbirds in the early nineties who trail blazed a path for credible UK country, then with his Sunday club Come Down Meet The Folks, which set the standard for the many Country clubs that followed in its wake and now with his current band, Alan Tyler & The Lost Sons of Littlefield . Alan still draws musical inspiration from his heroes George Jones, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings (from whose birthplace, Alan’s band take their name) and interweaves it with stories from Middle England and suburbia, creating a quintessentially English take on country.

This show celebrates the release of Alan’s new album, \'So Far”\' on Hanky Panky Records which features a fine and mighty collection of acoustic versions of Alan’s own material and country favourites.

They have featured in a Channel 4 documentary, \'The Hum Below\' and toured with Alabama 3. They have a new record lined up for release in 2008 to follow the critically acclaimed \'The Buzz Above\' and \'We Are Catfish\'.
