Wheeler Street, based in Maidstone in Kent, are a seven piece band all aged between sixteen and twenty who have a passion for folk music which is clear to anyone who meets them, and produces an explosion of energy when performing. They combine all the excitement and enthusiasm of youth with terrific musicianship, great vocals and imaginative arrangements of both original and traditional songs and tunes.

Although all the members of the band now live in the Maidstone area they bring to the sound influences from all around the UK and further afield. Ben comes from Newcastle and is of Irish parentage, Toby and Jon both have Scottish as well as English blood and Sophy was born in Australia and is also half Scottish. The band works so well because each and every member is fiercely passionate about the music they play and are commited to playing and singing with integrity and with utter respect to the tradition, but they also love a good time and they are one of the most entertaining and fun bands that are currently on the folk scene.

The description of "folk rock" is not really accurate but it avoids the use of the word fusion which is possibly worse. There are elements of rock music but also you can hear influences of funk, jazz, pop, reggae and all types of dance music but all firmly rooted in the folk tradition. Wheeler Street are young and highly original and inventive, if you think you don't like folk music this is the band that's going to change your mind.

"Barely 18 months out of the starting blocks, Wheeler Street have made one hell of an impact. They have deservedly been playing at festivals the length and breadth of the land." (fRoots)
