Cult English band And Also The Trees play their only 2008 UK date at the Luminaire following a hugely successful European tour.
This seminal band, described by John Peel as "too English for the English" and still often cited by Robert Smith as his favourite band, has been constantly active - releasing ten studio albums, numerous live and compilation albums and forging a reputation as a fiercely independent group of musicians for whom artistic integrity has always held court over commercial gain.
Their latest release '(Listen for) The Rag and Bone Man' takes us on a dreamlike journey through dark landscapes populated by stray nursery rhyme characters, mysterious women who peer into the psyche and pools of light that appear like reflections of their pastoral upbringing... touched by the likes of Scott Walker, Tom Waits, Calexico and Arthur Lee's Love.
Cited as hugely influential over a plethora of guitar based bands, And Also The Trees continue to enhance their reputation and guarantee their continued appeal as a global "underground" phenomenon.
“Justin’s radiant guitar work, backed by rippling piano and pulsing double bass, switches from quiet introspection to a raging torrent”. (Rocksound)
"The perfect mixture of melancholic guitar-works and Simon Huw Jones' striking voice is what makes an And Also The Trees gig so fascinating." (Sparklingphotos.de)
The ominous qualities are darker and hotter, the more measured are dreamier, and the end result is remarkable. Another stunner from them then, and enticingly weird, as though Wim Wenders was brought up in the Midlands. (Mick Mercer on ‘(Listen for) The Rag and Bone Man')
Support comes from Evi Vine, a hugely talented singer/songwriter emerging from the UK’s underground music scene. Inspired by such diverse artists as Leonard Cohen, the Cocteau Twins and Arvo Part, Evi’s powerful, but minimalist narrative style is very much her own. Her voice is haunting, lyrical and other-worldly.
