Xiu Xiu is the much-fabled brainchild of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart and a revolving cast of musicians - currently multi-instrumentalist Angela Seo and percussionist Ches Smith. Xiu Xiu's sound draws heavily from wildly disparate sources - cacophonous noise, gamelan, folk and the lush hooks of '80s UK post-punk, to name a few - while Jamie's tortured lyrics and anguished delivery consistently deal with the yearning, morose and taboo. 'Dear God I Hate Myself' - the band's seventh full-length album is released next month through Kill Rock Stars and continues the tradition with their albums of pushing into new territories and ever more inventive sonics.

Irma Vep are two fine, young Welsh gentlemen who understand that beauty sometimes / often lurks in the darkest corners, that the burden of truth is a heavy one, that if you look hard enough terror looms everywhere and that none of this should be ignored. Guitar lines creep ivy-like over the crumbling towers of their songs, decorating them, holding them together. Even the most involved playing and bombastic percussion serve the song foremost and destroy your conscious later. Irma Vep have a ton of wildly diverse, heavy and expansive releases on Ikuisus, Comfortable on a Tightrope and their own Giant Hell imprint all available now.
