Groanbox, the North American trio of Michael Ward-Bergeman, Cory Seznec and Paul Clifford, are a musical hybrid of ideas and ideals. They are at first glance a roots band, soaked in the traditions of American music, with all the guts of rock and roll and all the soul of the wandering troubadour. But somewhere along the way, that troubadour turned off the trusted road and, from the melting pot of New Orleans, began a new journey that would take the Groanbox sound to new and unexplored places.

"They have a completely new, completely different take on the music. Simply amazing!" – Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2

"A return to eclecticism that hasn't been in style since the heyday of psychedelia..." - Chris Jones, Songlines

"Truly one of those nights." - Jeremy Searle, Maverick

"Utterly enthralling. This is music that goes deep into the roots of popular music. Mixed in here is West African Griot songs, Deep South blues, Nashville harmonies, Eastern European gypsy dances, even a touch of English Morris Dancing...."  - Ben Chu, The Independent

Support is from CC Green and Naughty Jack

Performers from the play Cross Road Blues – a dark subversive retelling of the myth of Robert Johnson and his pact with the devil – bring some of the great bluesman's songs to life, along with a few other classics from the pre-war era.  Naughty Jack, hailed by Blues Matters magazine as "this year's Seasick Steve" is a virtuoso slide guitar and Dobro player, who has headlined the secret Farmageddon festival in Cambridgeshire since its conception.  CC Green is an actor and singer, and a veteran of the National Youth Theatre and National Youth Musical Theatre.

Cross Road Blues is at the Hackney Empire on 16th July, for one night only.
