Sun 2nd The Luminaire presents DIANE CLUCK + Barry Bliss + Beth Jeans Houghton
Doors 7.30 "Just a voice, a guitar, and some of the most spellbinding words you’ll hear anywhere." [Mojo] Diane Cluck is a New York-based singer-songwriter affiliated with the Anti-folk scene centred around open mic nights at the Sidewalk Cafe. She has recorded five albums since 2001. Her music is more sophisticated than many artists' of the genre, played using acoustic guitar, piano, organ and xylophone. Her influences are specific: Kate Bush, Chopin (when she used to play classical) and early twentieth century composer Erik Satie. She appreciates his very beautiful minimalist piano stuff, works that he is most famous for and are among her favorites. She is lately occupied in creating "skeletons," of songs, songs that are actually capable of standing up and walking around with as little adornment as possible. Her current body of work she considers very wordy: lots of words and too many notes.
Her song 'Monte Carlo' appeared on the Rough Trade compilation 'Anti Folk Volume 1' in 2001 alongside other luminaries of the scene. She has collaborated with both Jeffrey Lewis and Herman Düne in the past. Barry Bliss - supporting - was born in the '60s to a woman that sang a lot and a man that fished and climbed water towers. He never wanted for anything and was much loved. His mother later bought him his first 12-string. He later quit music and lived hiding in the woods and getting his food out of grocery store dumpsters. He then stopped doing that, returned to music, and became the living legend that he is today. Hey-Ho. Opening is Beth Jeans Houghton. Effortlessly constructing experimental, wonky folk-pop from her secret Newcastle base, Beth cites Nico, Simon & Garfunkel and Frank Zappa as influences." |
