Thu 14th Complete Control presents THE WOODENTOPS + The Jazz Butcher + They Came From The Stars, I Saw Them
Doors 7.30
Signed to Rough Trade Records, The Woodentops released a series of singles in 1985 and their debut album, entitled 'Giant', in 1986. Generally well received by critics, the album's sound was characterised by acoustic guitars, but also featured accordion, marimba, strings and trumpet, showing influences of Suicide. The band then became more experimental and frenetic live, using more electric guitar and electronic sounds. The Jazz Butcher: "Pat Fish/The Jazz Butcher is one of the most brilliant incisive pop writers Britain has produced since the glory days of Ray Davies and Pete Townsend. Criminally overlooked by a media obsessed by the next big thing instead of what is actually good. A truly great songwriter." [Alan McGee]
Of They Came From The Stars I Saw Them, Drowned In Sound say; "Bands like TCFTSIST have such a rare emotion, led by curiosity, rather than the familiar ease into which our generation is all too easily letting itself slip. This music should not be picked to pieces, it should be heard as a progression in the greater scheme of things. Provactive, intelligent, skilled, daring and very intriguing!" |
