Magnétophone were formed in 1995 by two Birmingham-based artists and soundsmiths, Matt Saunders and John Hanson. After early captivating shows and standout singles on Static Caravan an Earworm the band were soon snapped up by 4AD for their heavily electronic first LP. 'I Guess Sometimes I Need Reminding.'
Their second 4AD LP - the much aclaimed 'The Man Who Ate The Man' - features a star-studded cast including Kim and Kelly Deal, King Creosote, James Yorkston plus many others and reveals a band writing genre defying songs of intense beauty and emotion. Obvious banner bearers for the new movement - with a unique meld of electro folk and avant garde rock and roll.
In 2005 the band was swelled by the presence of Sonic Boom, of neo-psychedelic legends Spacemen 3, finely rounding out their three ring circus of captivating light, haunting melody and compulsive rythmns. If the sort of perfect avant pop achieved by the Velvet Underground appeals, then Magnetophone are one of the first bands since to achieve such a rewarding & enthralling spectre.
Tonight's multimedia show will see them supported by the quickly becoming legendary They Came From The Stars, I Saw Them' and a unique night of entertainment with lightshows, guest DJs (including Sonic Boom ) and further supports inevitably means another great night at the Luminaire.
Of They Came From The Stars I Saw Them Drowned In Sound say; "Bands like TCFTSIST have such a rare emotion, led by curiosity, rather than the familiar ease into which our generation is all too easily letting itself slip. This music should not be picked to pieces, it should be heard as a progression in the greater scheme of things. Provactive, intelligent, skilled, daring and very intriguing!"
Or more simply; "This could be a posse of Clangers let loose in the studio with hallucinogens, plastic recorders, and a mic pointed at the cosmic vortex." [Sleaze Nation]
Or more simply still; "Rush-of-blood-to-the-head exciting. Awesome." [Careless Talk Costs Lives]
