Casiotone For The Painfully Alone is the musical alias of 28 year old American film school drop-out Owen Ashworth. Owen began making music in 1997, after he realized that song-making was a far more cost-effective means of storytelling than film-making. The first 3 CFTPA albums, released through Tomlab, were made using only battery operated keyboards and electronics recorded to 4-track cassette and defined a hybrid strain of raw, emotional and very homemade synth pop that was instantly recognis-able as Ashworth's own.
Believing he had taken his self-imposed set of limitations to their logical conclusion, Owen has developed his sound for the new record 'Etiquette', expanding his once utilitarian aesthetic to a broader production spectrum of instrumentation and collaboration.
As such, tonight Owen is joined by The Dead Science, acting as a backing band to recreate that lush 'Etiquette' sound.
The Dead Science is the Seattle trio of Jherek Bischoff, Nick Tamburro and Sam Mickens. Just like their buddies and collaborators, Yellow Swans and Xiu Xiu, The Dead Science ply their trade in a kind of affecting, emotional, hyperdramatic pop music, underpinned with subliminal, experimental elements. Their schooling in free-jazz oft shines through, turning the dynamic of the usual rock 3 piece on it's head - Tamburro's drums turn lopsided somersaults, Bischoff's twisted wire of an upright bass holds the melody, leaving Micken's high-register croon and guitar as the steadiest instruments of the bunch. Check out their numerous releases on Absolutely Kosher for more.
First on, Hamilton Yarns, formed in the winter of 2002 with a desire to tell tales. Iain Paxon, Alistair Strachan and Richard Herring started the ball rolling with a series of songs woven together by a fanfare of lost horns and stubby fingered guitar picking. Since then they have played the length and breadth of the country with an ever-revolving cast, from old stone barns to Quaker meeting houses to the foyer of the Barbican! The Yarns' sound encompasses forlorn vocals, toys, pianos, strings, brass, accordions and harmoniums, teasing the listener with minimal lines and ramshackle episodic narratives. The result is a distressed parlour music, both very original and very English. |
