Wed 7th The Luminaire and ServiceAV present dsh blp with BASQUIAT STRINGS + Vincet Oliver + Matthew Rozeik with Triggerset Collective visuals + Ben Eshmade [DJ, Arctic Circle] + Infantjoy [DJ]
Doors 7.30 Basquiat Strings were the outsider nomination for this year's Nationwide Mercury Prize 2007 with their debut album 'Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford'. Led by the virtuoso Ben Davis on cello they finds inspiration from the raucous, driving Hungarian string groups of Transylvania, the luxuriously rich Brahms sextets and the unruly compositions and workshop arrangements of Charles Mingus. They are joined this evening by astounding New Yorkian drummer Chris Vatalaro. "Basquiat feels like a real, gigging band, with great solos from all players, and Davis is a star." (****) The Guardian "The end result is exhilarating: imagine a gut-strung Weather Report." (****) Manchester Evening News “Basquiat Strings could just turn out to be one of the most unlikely successes of the year” ****The Sunday Times Main support is Vincent Oliver, "an insanely beautiful sound comparable to Slowdive’s Alison or the finest moments of Ulrich Schnauss. A fabulous start for a strange series, recommended.” [Boomkat.com] “By all accounts Vincent Oliver is a name you should remember and perhaps bandy about if that’s what you like to do. For a first time release this is really on a very accomplished and thoughtful level. Well deserving of it’s beautiful packaging this is a gentle epic that will whip up a quiet storm.” [Warpmart, UK] “Vincent Oliver creates kaleidoscopic music with touches of irony and full of purity that subtly reference a variety of inspirations.” [Trax Magazine] "Vincent Oliver puts forward a fluid intelligent electronica which will garner him respect from established artists.” [Popnews, France] Opening up we have The Matthew Rozeik Ensemble; a quiet/loud electronic rock group. "Blending guitars, strings and the subtlest of rhythmic beds into finely crafted songs. [The Wire] "A decidedly disarming and unworldly sonic hybrid." [Losing Today] "The theme from Emmerdale sung by Wesley Willis." [Some guy at a show] |
