Tue 14th The Luminaire presents JON LANGFORD'S SHIP & PILOT featuring Sally Timms and Tony Maimone + Danbert NoBacon [acoustic] + Striplight
Doors 7.30
Jon Langford's is a wayward path. For 30 years, the Chicago-based Welshman has made his name at doing exactly the opposite of what his choices in life seemed to lead him towards. Ditching art school to co-found the legendary Mekons in 1977, he and his gang plied a loose, noisy trade in raw, fundamentalist punk-rock, before departing defiantly into folky territory with country record 'Fear and Whiskey', a record which arguably reinvented the Mekons, winning them critical acclaim and a new fanbase, and was instrumental in the emergence of alt-country. The stage seemed set to catapult the Mekons to new heights, but relations with their new major label crumbled, leaving the band unsigned. Langford's involvement in the visual arts resurfaced in a similar fashion, martyring his country heroes in quasi-iconic paintings that smooshed together religious imagery and a folky, ragged aesthetic. Since then, he's spent his time painting and exhibiting, and darting between Mekons touring and various other musical projects.
His latest guise, as Jon Langford's Ship and Pilot, sees him teaming up again with Mekons' Sally Timms among others, and continuing to sew up the gaps between country, punk and indie-rock. His heavy take on bluegrass is as potent as his punky inclinations were thirty years ago, balancing melancholic, reproachful social observations with the boisterous onstage chemistry between him and Timms.
