In the Autumn of 1997, Rothko released 'For Danny' on Fierce Panda Records; a 7" single called 'For Danny', followed swiftly by the 7” ‘Seventyseven A’/’Undone’. All three tracks were produced by Julian Standen. Their first album, ‘A Negative for Francis’, was released on Jon Tye’s Lo Recordings in 1998.

The original line up of founder member Mark Beazley, Crawford Blair and Jon Meade, went on to release EPs, singles and three albums, on labels such as Lo Recordings, Bella Union, Foundry, Kraak, Zeal and Narwhal. In 2001, the original line-up disbanded and Mark carried on the Rothko name. His first release on his own was the ‘Waters Edge’ 12” EP on Lo Recordings, his collaboration with Japanese ambient master Susumu Yokota, and then in 2002, the album 'A Continual Search For Origins' and 7" single Red Cells on the Too Pure label.

In 2003 Mark started his own label, Trace Recordings, releasing the critically acclaimed ‘Wish For A World Without Hurt’ album, a collaboration with BLK w/BEAR [aka Washington DC based sound and visual artist Jim Adams]. Since 2004, the line up has been Mark, with Michael Donnelly, also on bass, Ben Page on sounds and keyboards and Tom Page, [Bens’ brother] on drums and percussion, who all also played on ‘A Continual Search For Origins’

Expect beautiful ambient scores and quiet post rock soundscapes.

Main support are Solo Andata. A defining element of their sound is isolation and separation. In mid-2005, Paul Fiocco and Kane Ikin literally separated and began working in isolation. Paul moved to Stockholm, Sweden while Kane remained in Perth, Australia.
Using laptops and the internet, they began the process that would eventually produce ‘Fyris Swan’ - a collection of compositions that recalls the essence of the avant-garde and free jazz with its deep loops and twisted drones while alluding to the classic non-symphonic film scores.
Solo Andata was once described as "Alice Coltrane minus the harp". At times the songs evoke the loneliness of their mutual isolation with melodies that, at the same time, are joyous and even beautiful. In their subtlety, the songs evoke playfulness in the looseness and delicacy of the grooves. Hefty Records is proud to introduce SOLO ANDATA. Fans of Talk Talk, Sigur Ros, Tortoise, Fennesz, Tape, Savath & Salvals, Gastr del Sol and Town & Country will likely enjoy their rich, pastoral sounds. Tonight Hefty Records celebrate Solo Andata's debut album release, ‘Fyris Swan’, released on November 20

"Similar to Scott Herren’s Savath + Savalas project, this enchanting debut album is the work of two musicians on different sides of the world trading acoustic guitar lines over iChat. There’s a simplistic beauty at the heart of this project that will appeal to both the folk and electronica crowds.” [Dazed & Confused]

"A looming tapestry of undulating, post-rockian, free jazz-tinged, minutiae-detailing, electro-acoustic brilliance, Fyris Swan's chest-tugging magnitude is a striking testament to the role of time, space, and technology in composition.” [XLR8R]

“Linear movements in electro-acoustic music...few do it so well. We could just sit and watch for a while.” [URB]

Tonight's opening is Seven Sang, the creation of songwriter Michael Savage. Distant clouded melodies combine with glitched microbeats and intimate vocals for a deep listening experience. The performance showcases new songs from the 'Blindfold' EP, available at the gig.

We're particularly pleased to welcome Seven Sang back for their third Lumi show.
