Magik Markers are three childhood friends and room-mates, originating from Hartford, Connecticut. Begun on a quiet night as a cure for boredom in a grandparent's basement some 4 or 5 years ago, Leah Quimby (bass), Elisa Ambrogio (guitar / vocals) and Pete Nolan (drums / trumpet) have followed a unique path since, with their blend of garage-rock, free improvisation and pure noise. Leah brings out the bowel-churning drones, Pete is the rhythmic powerhouse, whilst Elisa enters the deepest trance imaginable - writing off a guitar with every performance and howling like some kinda inexplicable crossbreed between motivational gospel preacher, philosophy lecturer and straight-up *rock* icon. The resulting performance has to be seen to be truly believed!
Birds of Delay is the duo of Steven Warwick and Luke Younger, who are based somewhere between Leeds and London. Since their last UTR appearance, almost 2 years ago, the Birds have blossomed into one of the best offerings from the UK noise scene, with a prolific outpouring of material, through a never ending list of labels, including Chocolate Monk and American Tapes, and their continually evolving live performances. While their sound is underpinned by some almighty drones, the pair bring out an ever-changing array of instruments and electronic trickery to create some of the most intrciately rendered 'noise' around.
Temperatures are a duo from London, who continue to astound us and critics alike with their increasingly complex sonic movements. They make use of drums, bass, various percussive military ephemera and a suitcase-sized synth all the way from California, yet, in the time-honoured manner of Can, Sightings or Gang Gang Dance, leave an audience pondering "where are all these sounds coming from exactly?" It's a metallic, instrumental music with a restless energy - precisely "marching band", yet unrelentingly spazzy ryhthms collide with humping bass twitches and noise drones, creating something completely hypnotic. Check out the excellent 7" for 4th Harmonic for more!
