SMEGMA is an eight, sometimes nine piece phenomenon, which emerged from the degenerate slum of the Los Angeles Free Music Society in the 70s. An anti-musical, anti-authoritarian group, there is no hook, no predictability, no comfortable recognisable system with this "band". Currently, they are an almost invisible, yet continually unsettling presence on the Portland, Oregon scene, their approach, stamina and glorification of deviance, escapism and brutality has been a key influence on the likes of Black Dice, Yellow Swans and Wolf Eyes, with whom SMEGMA oft collaborate and perform.
RUNZELSTIRN & GURGLESTOCK is the work of long-running avant-garde visionary Rudolf Eb.er. Originally emerging from the the Swiss Schlimpfluch scene, along with folk such as Joke Lanz (aka Sudden Infant), RUNZELSTIRN has built quite a reputation for severe recordings and unpredictable live shows. His is the noise of spluttering soundscapes, gagging, dogs barking, a spurt of a melody, a sack of shit being punched, a vomit opera. It's a finely honed exercise of strict sexual discipline and sharp psychosis - an attack on the mind yet stimulating the senses, paralyzed by awe all the while!
Hototogisu is the ludicrously heavy, eye of the storm, ecstatic metal duo of Matthew Bower (of Skullflower, Sunroof & Total) and Marcia Bassett (of Double Leopards & Zaimph). Their sound is a total purging of the nervous system in iron-clad movements, populated by machine gun phase, rib-throbbing microphone feedback and whole orchestras of alarm codes - a sensory blitzkreig of the extremist kind!
DEEPKISS 720 (aka Jason Williams) is a shadowy figure on the UK noise underground. Jase started out with I'm Being Good in mid 90s Brighton, whilst exploring the less popular areas of art, noise and tape label culture with Dylan Nyoukis and the Prick Decay clan. DK720 set out to supply a "shit sound" for screenings by experimental film maker Jeff Keen. It went on to produce recordings of magic mushroom pyschosis and bloodletting live shows, preempting the current crop of noise manipulators by some years.
