Formed over a decade ago in Los Angeles out of the ashes of some of the USA's finest indie bands of the 1980s, The Coal Porters were originally an electric band centred around ex-Long Ryder Sid Griffin, author of the hit single "Looking For Lewis And Clark", and are now a dynamic bluegrass combo, featuring Sid Griffin; vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica and autoharp, Paul Sandy; bass & jazz proselytising, Gemma White; fiddle and vocals, Pat McGarvey; bass, banjo and vocals, Neil Robert; Herd guitar, sporran and vocals.
Kitty, Daisy and Lewis are extraordinary. Three siblings, none even close to school leaving age, aided and abetted by "two old geezers who sit at the back providing a kind of rhythm section with a double bass and a guitar". Lewis and his sisters all play varied instruments from the piano to banjos. On nearly every song they swap instruments. Their main influences are the three Louis' [Jordan, Prima and Armstrong] Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Booker T & the MGs, Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Robert Johnson, Rufus Thomas, Sam Cooke T-Bone Walker and more.
You must see them.
You will be amazed.
First on are The Cedars, who could be described as the spiritual offspring of Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith with a dose of bourbon and banjo thrown in for good measure. They are certainly great entertainent.
The bands finish around 11.30 after which the Complete Control boys and girls take, um, complete control of the decks until 2am. This being a rather special Friday night, they'll be in party mood. Expect all your New Years Eves,
Wedding Receptions and Office parties at once. Quality pop music from six decades. Everything from Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee and Elvis to Kylie and The Sugababes and all points in between. If it's fun, classy and danceable, you'll hear it tonight.
