After years of recording in relative seclusion in the hills of Los Angeles, Ariel Pink
(née Rosenberg) has been welcomed open-armed into the wider world, as nothing short of a genius. With two albums for the Animal Collective's Paw Tracks label under his belt, plus releases on Ball Bearings Pinatas and Southern's Latitudes imprint, Ariel has established himself as a prolific pop crooner, beloved of critics and kids alike. His sound is the history of popular music condensed through the ears of a reclusive romantic. Recording at home on a sun-warped 8 track and making drum sounds with only his mouth, Ariel gives us music, which is grandiose yet lo-fi, completely weird yet recognisably pop, unique yet highly addictive.
Born in the dense heat of New Orleans, Louisiana, Belong is a collaborative effort between Turk Dietrich and Michael Jones. Their debut long player 'October Language' has just been released by Car Park Records and it goes beyond traditional song structure to a place where melodic figures blur and textures are gorgeously sculpted into an ocean of sound. Following in the tradition of bands such as My Bloody Valentine and Gas, guitars, synths and other musical sources are wrenched from their typical tones, revealing themselves in bright shards of distortion. The sound encapsulates their hometown, at once bathed in sunlight and colors, yet dripping in a rich sadness, attempting to display the beauty in things that are worn, decayed or destroyed.
