Tue 31st The Luminaire presents MONKEY SWALLOWS THE UNIVERSE + Viarosa + James Severy
Doors 7.30 "Delightful indiepop." [The Daily Telegraph] Monkey Swallows The Universe are a folk-pop band from Sheffield, formed in 2004. In February 2006 the band released their debut album 'The Bright Carvings', on indie label Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation which led to support slots for Richard Hawley, Camera Obscura and The Long Blondes. "Capable of haunting, tear-prickling acoustic beauty...more than worthy of everyone's respect and attention." [Drowned in Sound] After signing at the start of 2007 to Loose, they have performed live sessions on BBC Radio 4, Radio 6 and XFM. They are due to follow up with their second album 'The Casket Letters' in July and are looking forward to playing some of this year's best festivals, such as Green Man and End of the Road. "Big big news" [Rough Trade] "Boss" [Richard Hawley] Main support are Viarosa. Described by Uncut magazine as “Outstanding… like The Birthday Party doing Johnny Cash", Viarosa continue to make their unique mark on the scene. With their debut album 'Where The Killers Run' now released in the US, they have recently opened for the likes of R.E.M., Midlake and Joan As Poilcewoman.
Opening is James Severy, sticking out like a sore thumb from the current batch of young singer songwriters with his unique take on pop music. Grimey beats accompany acoustic guitars, pianos and James’ world weary tones. James is proving to be one of the most inventive lyricists of his generation and his solo acoustic performances are not to be missed. He makes Jamie T look like a novice, accoring to big Jeff from Pom Pom Promotions. |
