David Devant And His Spirit Wife (named after a Victorian-era magician) began in Brighton, England in the early 1990s. A live show complete with glam style costumes, wigs and makeup, along with performance art props and lighting effects led to a cult following helped by cassette 'Don Spirit Specs Now!' and early singles.
The debut album 'Work, Lovelife, Miscellanous', despite spawning some cracking singles, failed to translate the theatrical energy of their unique live show to disc but subsequent releases have seen them focus on the songs (bit of indie rock, bit of glam) with more success. Tonight we have a career spanning set in support of their forthcoming career retrospective.
The would-be-goods are sharp, quietly sophisticated and utterly enchanting. If Audrey Tautou were a band...
Oddfellows Casino will be performing a live soundtrack to a half-hour film on the theme of Victorian seances, freakshows and Brighton. Starring former Salvador Dali model Drako Zarhazar, world moustache champion Michael Attree and DJ Heidi Heelz. The film was directed by old Devant chum Toby Amies.
