Following a now legendary performance at All Tomorrow's Parties in 2004, Phillip Roebuck will grace The Luminaire stage on this night.
A one-man-band for the modern age, armed with banjo, bass drum, incredible songs and a frenetic pace, he has entertained the world from the streets of New York City to huge stages sharing the bill with diverse acts such as Shellac, American Music Club, Nina Nastasia and Ralph Stanley.
Born in Virginia, his father was a folk singer, and Phillip started playing guitar and writing music himself at the age of twelve. Ten years later, he moved to New York City, where he would develop his banjo style, performing every single day in the subway or on the street. Before the development of the one-man-band, Phillip played in several New York based bands, the most recent being Brooklyn Browngrass and The Boggs. He was voted 'Subway Musician of the Year in 2002' by the New York Press and has since toured the world playing from street corners to large stages. John Peel was a fan and did a session with Phillip in 2004.
"He plucks that banjo like a madman, like the devil himself." [New York Press]
"Phillip Roebuck put an invigorating twist on the one-man-band set-up. With a mean banjo, and bass drum strapped to his back, he swept away any day-three cobwebs in a terrifically energetic punk-folk style. " [The Independent]
Main support is from South African songwriter and performer [Chris] Letcher, who has released four critically acclaimed albums of his own work. The most recent, 'Bignity', written and recorded with fellow songwriter Matthew van der Want, was nominated in the Best Rock Album category at the 2003 South African music industry awards. He also writes music for film, and is studying towards a doctorate in film music composition at the Royal College of Music, London.
His London-based band, Letcher, is made up of David Eugene Webb (drums), Andrew Joseph (bass), Ross Richardson (guitar) and Victoria Hume (synths, voice).
"His music is enormously melodic with fascinating hooks that easily work their way into your grey matter.'' [Spitz]
First on, we're pleased to say, is Marc Meon, the mostly solo entity of Marc Shearer, formerly of Octopus (Food records). Recently he's been playing with Adem (Domino Records) and has been producing and playing with Jim Reid of The Jesus and Mary Chain.
"Like a Nick Drake with equal parts sun and moon." (Uncut)
"A tall, gangling psychedelic Scotsman." (The Times)
"Very beautiful indeed." (Radio 6)
