According to Mojo, "The Broken Family Band are seemingly hell-bent on reclaiming country as a legitimate vehicle for mordant philosophising and stirring melodic adventure."
Since forming in Cambridge in 2001 they've chucked out 3 full-length records, 2 mini-albums, played more shows than some professional touring bands (all over the UK, Germany, Texas, Scandinavia etc), been all over the radio AND they've still got proper jobs, girlfriends and lives. Johnson and Roman still live in Cambridge, Adams moved to North London and Williams lives in the East Anglian countryside. Adams even released the album 'Problems' by The Singing Adams (on Track & Field) in November 2005. They're busy boys. 'Balls (released in February) is the third full-length album from The Broken Family Band. They've got a good reputation for peddling jangly country music, but 'Balls' shows there's more to them than that. 'Balls' shows off The Broken Family Band's love of indie rock, heavy metal, country-flavoured ballads, punk and arty pop meanderings, without the slightest thought for fashion or trends. In the past the band have recorded in rural Norfolk, but for 'Balls' they decided to record in the big city. It took them 8 days with Brian O'Shaughnessy (Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Beth Orton) in an East London studio to knock this one out, and they chose to record on old fashioned tape without any of that digital witchcraft.
They've been all over the radio (including a recent session on the Jonathon Ross show for Mark "they're my new favourite band!" Lamarr, Radio 2, as well as Mark Radcliffe, Peel, Rob Da Bank, XFM, 6Music, Virgin sessions), get smothered with love in all the fancy music press, they smashed it at Glastonbury 2005 (ask anyone who saw it!) as well as Bestival and several other UK and European festivals.
Arrogant frontman Adams says: ‘The latest stuff we’re doing is straight to the point - this is rock 'n' roll, pop, country stuff, whatever, but you can tell we mean it. We don't care about the latest fashionable guitar sound or whether or not we sound like we come from a certain era. We'll leave that to the kids in the skinny ties. We're pop music fans and we make music that has some our favourite influences in it. It’s still pretty dark, but this time you can tell we've got a heart."
