Let's Go Baboon presents it's Easter extravaganza, starring...
My Sad Captains, a London based five-piece, who've been building a steady fan base since 2004. Over the last few months their stock has risen considerably with appearances on Steve Lamacq, Kooba Radio's February band of the month and support slots for the Broken Family Band & Tilly And The Wall. It is on their mighty live performances that they were invited to headline the Lets Go Baboon Easter extravaganza.
Their website names influences as Pavement, Grandaddy, Wilco, Yo La Tengo and Mogwai. Indeed, you can hear all of these in the sound; American rock, touched with country lashes, occasional fiery noise outbursts whilst maintaining catchy pop hooks throughout. What makes My Sad Captains shine out is the brilliant and dynamic singing of Ed Wallis, who has the same vocal impact of the languidly melodic Stephen Malkmus in his prime. Every song is instant, insistent, melodic and, quite frankly, fantastic.
Main support is from
MJ Hibbett and the Validators who, since forming in 1998 have had a Record Of The Year in Rolling Stone, performed live on BBC national radio, toured the country, and had over two million people download of their songs 'Hey Hey 16K'' (currently being re-worked to 'Hey Hey 64K'!).
In 2004 Rob Manuel of cult internet site b3ta.com created a flash animation of the band's song 'Hey Hey 16K', about the legacy of 1980s home computers. It became a massive hit - over a million people downloaded the song in the first week alone, making it the fifth most popular download in the whole world. The song became an international phenomenon, was featured on television and in print all over the world, covered by Canadian Mounties and Norwegian schoolchildren, and led to a range of highly popular t-shirts.
Currently preparing for the release of their new album 'We Validate!', Hibbett and his Validators produce stunning pop prose. Comparisons have been made with Billy Bragg, Half Man Half Biscuit and the Wedding Present.
First on are
By The Fireside, a collective formed around the talented songwriter Daniel Lea. They create hazy, lo-fi, alt-country sounds, described by Rough Trade on the release of their first EP as "mixing lo-fi loops with ramshackle folk". They are a british counterpart to Sparklehorse & Grandaddy but bring more traditional elements of folk to the mix. They?ve been known to use of a range of instruments including lowrey organ, glockenspiel, mellotron & optigan. Tonight, they bring a paired down four-piece promoting their recently released EP 'Then Came Noon'.
