Formed in 2003, Clayhill are a band born from three very different musical backgrounds. Ali (bassist, keyboards) and Ted (guitar, keyboards) were both working on Beth Orton's 'Trailer Park' album when they first identified former 'Sunhouse' frontman Gavin Clark as the band's lead singer.
Originally, Ali was a member of the experimental electronica band 'Red Snapper', while Gavin fronted Sunhouse and Ted was concentrating on his solo album 'Short Scenes'. Incidentally, both Ted and Ali were co-working on the music for 'Once Upon A Time In The Midland' ' a film by critically acclaimed UK director Shane Meadows ' when they discovered that Gavin was one of his oldest friends. 'Ted and I had wanted to try working together on something,' says Ali. 'Once I heard Gav's voice I wanted him to be the next member of the band which we'd decided to form.' Influenced by the singer/songwriter generation of Dylan, the individuality of The Smiths and the energy of Beta Band, Clayhill are clearly a coming together of genres.
Based across the UK ' Gavin in Stoke, Ali in London and Ted in Kent ' their style of songwriting is as unrestricted as their sound. 'The distance helps creativity,' adds Ali. 'It has forced us to try writing in a new way which is both prolific and soulful. We all put into the process from a slightly removed position then pull it together. I like the fusion of musical perspectives this brings. The three different styles merge together quite organically to define us.' Signed to Eat Sleep Records immediately after their first show at London's Bush Hall, the band released their debut album 'Small Circle' in 2004. 'We don't sound like anyone else,' says Gavin. 'It's an odd combination that makes it difficult to slot into any current trend. There's a heaviness or depth about the music which other bands don't seem to have.'
